"Egg of the King - Berserk Exchange" is a gift exchange in which participants create and receive fanfic or fanart in the Berserk fandom.
Fanfic must be a minimum of 500 words, and fanart must be a clean sketch on unlined paper. There is no minimum requirement for treats.
As a participant, you submit a signup with your requests and offers. Your request is assigned to another participant who will create a gift based on it, and you are assigned someone else's request in turn. All participants will receive a gift. Matching is done on medium, relationship and one freeform tag.
Schedule:
Nominations: April 12-19
Signups: April 20 - May 4
Assignments: May 5
Works Due: June 15
Work Reveals: June 22
Creator Reveals: June 29
Tagset: https://archiveofourown.org/tag_sets/19126
What are nominations?
In order for you to request a relationship or freeform tag, it needs to be part of the Egg of the King - 2024 Berserk Exchange tagset.
During the nomination stage of the exchange, the tagset is co-created by the prospective participants, who can submit relationships and freeform tags they would like to create or receive a gift for. You may nominate items for the tagset even if you are not sure if you wish to include them in your signup.
You may nominate 5 relationships and 10 freeform tags at most.
The freeform tags can be tropes (e.g., Alternate Universe - Soulmates, Hanahaki Disease), kinks (e.g., Size Difference, Nonconsensual Somnophilia), or scenarios (e.g., Character Travels Back in Time to Meet Their Past Self). Nominations open on 12 April and close on 19 April.
How do I sign up?
You can find the signup form on the collection's sidebar.
Your signup must include at least one request and at least one offer. (See below for more details on how these work.)
You can modify or delete your signup up until signups close.
How do requests work?
Your request must include medium, at least one relationship, and at least three freeform tags. These will be used for automated matching later down the line.
Along with the freeform tags, try to include a description of what you like and dislike to help your creator make a gift for you - for example, your favorite tropes, or a couple of prompts you may have in mind.
Please also list your DNWs (Do Not Wants) in your signup's "Description" field. A DNW is anything that you absolutely do not want to read or see, because it would spoil a gift for you. This could be a kink, a character, a trope, etc. Please try to formulate your DNWs in a neutral manner, without kinkshaming.
DNWs should not railroad your creator - for example, you cannot request Guts/Any Female Character and then DNW "any pairing except Guts/Casca."
How do offers work?
You must offer at least one medium, at least one relationship, and at least four freeform tags.
Please try and make sure your offer matches at least one request. When signups close, matches will be automatically generated. If no requests match your offers, the moderator will contact you to see if you can offer anything else. If you do not reply within 48 hours, your signup will be deleted.
How does matching work?
Participants will match on the following:
- One medium (fanfic or fanart)
- One relationship
- One freeform tag
How do I view my assignment?
Your assignment will be sent to the email address associated with your AO3 account. If you do not receive an email, please check your spam folder.
You can also see your assignment by going to your AO3 dashboard and clicking ‘Assignments’ on the column at the left side of the screen.
Please note that once assignments go out, you cannot change your signup anymore.
How do I create my gift?
The gift you create:
- must be a completed fic of at least 500 words or a clean sketch on unlined paper (does not need to be colored)
- must be based on the recipient's request: it must match the medium, at least one relationship and at least one freeform tag
- must respect the recipient's DNWs
Anything else in the "Description" field is an optional detail, including prompts and favorite tropes, and you are not obliged to follow it. However, you are expected to make a good-faith effort to create something that matches your recipient's request.
How do I submit my assignment?
In order to post your work, select ‘Post New Work’ in the top right-hand corner of AO3. Fill out the form as you usually would, and then, under the "Associations" field, tick the appropriate box for this exchange and your recipient.
Since this is an anonymous exchange, please do not include any links to your social media in your author's notes - not until reveals.
I have a question about my assignment. What should I do?
Please do not contact your recipient directly. Remember: you are supposed to be anonymous! If you have any questions about your assignment, contact the moderator at enisy148@proton.me, and they will reach out to the recipient on your behalf.
What if I can't complete my assignment?
Please default as soon as you know you cannot complete your assignment, so that the moderator can find a pinch hit for your recipient. To default, go to your "Assignments" page on AO3, find this exchange and click "Default."
What's a pinch hit?
In cases where a participant is unmatchable, their creator defaults, or the gift they received includes a stated DNW, their request will be assigned to a volunteer called a "pinch hitter." The collection will not open until everyone who signed up and did not default has received at least one gift.
How do I sign up for pinch hits?
Pinch hits will be posted to the Dreamwidth community and the Failconia Discord server. To pick up a pinch hit, comment on the post that lists the pinch hits with your AO3 username and the pinch hit you wish to pick up. You do not need a Dreamwidth account to do this. All comments will be screened for anonymity.
What are treats?
A treat is an extra gift created for a participant who is not your assigned recipient. You can treat whether or not you have signed up to the exchange. There are no minimum requirements for treats, but they still need to respect the recipient's requests, in the same way as assignments.
